Worry Wart

Hey There, Blog Fans!

Today, I’m taking a look at a book. (hey, I’m a poet!)

Written by the exceptionally lovely Dani, Worry Wart is a fantastic comic/diary/blog/super important document that deals with the issues faced by anyone suffering from mental health issues, specifically Generalised Anxiety Disorder and even more specifically, Dani herself.

I’ll be honest, when I began reading the blog that this book is taken from, it made me cry. Putting herself very much out there, Dani talks about things that many people with mental health issues, myself included, live with and presents it in such a way that makes you realise “hey, it doesn’t have to be like this. It can get better”.

Her approach to the subject is perfect. The often troubling nature of the disorder is lightened by the almost unbearably cute coloured pictures and a streak of humour that runs through the entire book. Dani touches on many a serious subject but in such a way that it doesn’t drag you down. Her optimism that things can and will get better shines through all of her writing.

Now, be prepared, there’s a lot of talk of toilet trouble in this book and rightly so. There are so many sides to anxiety that people just don’t/won’t talk about (toilet trouble, nausea, sweating, shaking, excessive wind, to name just a few!) and Dani tackles them all in a brutally honest yet comical way (geddit? It’s a comical comic.. never mind.)

This book holds more information than a lot of medical textbooks I’ve read and, trust me, I’ve read a lot. It’s main advantage is that it presents the information in a way that is instantly engaging. It’s education, but fun!

By the end of the book, you find yourself really rooting for Dani. You want her to beat this, to come out victorious, and does she? Well, you’ll have to wait for the second book.

One outcome that you can see the results of already are the amazing recipes that Dani has concocted to feed her rather fragile tummy. Yeah, I said tummy. Deal with it.

If you know of anyone that is suffering from Generalised Anxiety Disorder or maybe you’re just after a comic with a little more depth, then this is the book for you. I can’t stress the importance of books such as this one enough. It’s entertaining, yes, but it also teaches you something and can help you to realise that you’re not alone.
